Shall never see it but a holiday.
I'm visiting another country right now, which is a sophisticated way of saying I'm on vacation. And it's a sun-cation, in The Bahamas, which means I've had a lot of time to read these past few days. So, I am making my way through
The Recognitions
, but it isn't without its troubles.
While the beach or the pool side provide an excellent place to read, a thousand page hardcover book does not provide one with an easy means of doing so. Now I understand I won't get me a lot of sympathy, but I'm supposed to be relaxing on vacation, and this isn't the most relaxing book. Partly because I'm not enjoying it that much, and partly because it's just a little on the heavier side, both physically and intellectually.
For better or for worse, when I'm on vacation, I find more 'mindless' reads seem to be more appropriate. I don't seem to be alone on this either, as I've noticed countless people around the resort reading Clive Cussler, Nicholas Sparks, or Tom Clancy. I'm sure at home their noses are buried in Dostoyevsky or something similar.
But I keep plodding along with
The Recognitions
, by splitting my time with a few other books. Currently I'm also reading
An Idiot Abroad
, which seems particularly fitting for when I'm out of the country. It also doesn't require a ton of focus, so I can distract myself with it for a a little bit, then return to my big read.
